How to swab a firearm for DNA testing
An analysis of recent successes in identifying handlers of firearms showed that DNA analysis resulted in informative results 93% of the time while Latent Print analysis provided informative results in just 4% of the time. As such, Latent Print testing of firearms will be reserved for serious crimes against people. To improve firearms case turn-around times, the lab has asked for assistance from our law enforcement partners in the collection of DNA evidence prior to submission of the firearms. A video demonstrating the process of swabbing firearms is found here.
